The polls open on May 5^th to vote on Proposal 1.  This proposal will determine if the sales tax is raised from 6 cents to 7 cents in Michigan.  If you think this will never pass, don’t count on it.  One of the problems is when people think like that and don’t bother to go to the polls to vote. Those in favor of it passing are counting on it!   The fewer people going to the polls may just pass this bill. 

There are so many issues with the proposal, besides seeing the sales tax increase.    Only a portion of the money collected from this proposal is going for road repair.  Approximately 60% of the money, a little more than half, will be used for roads.  The rest of the money is going for things tacked onto this bill.

Don’t be fooled that the 19 cents gas tax is going away. It’s simple being replaced with a wholesale gas tax that can be as much as 42 cents.

If passed, the first three years of the money collected for the road portion will be used to pay down debt previously incurred.  We will start immediately paying the higher taxes, but will not see any road improvements until about 2018.   We need road improvements started sooner than that.

I want to see our roads fixed. Our legislator needs to look at the money they already have, put their heads together, and come up with a better plan. 

In American we may all have different viewpoints. The most important issue is that we all have an opportunity to get out and vote and let our voices be heard. I urge you to vote on May 5^th. Hope to see you at the polls!
