Keeping the grass roots growing!!
Lapeer Community Schools will hold a public hearing on November 17 (Thursday), at the Lapeer Community Schools Administration and Services Center, (250 Second St.) at 7 p.m. Among the issues being heard is a change to the current by-laws extending the term of office for members of the Board of Education from a term of four years to six years.
Many of the citizens of our community are not aware of this proposed change. At first thought it may appear to be a cost savings to limit frequent elections. But this also limits the power of the people to make changes with their vote if they disagree with the decision made by the school board.
Those we elect set the standards of education for the children of our community and decide how our tax dollars are utilized. If terms are allowed to be extended for six years our hands are tied two years longer to make changes, if changes are warranted. Four years is long enough to make improvements to our local educational system and supervise it properly. The board members who best represent the will of the people will be elected for another term. Those who do not won’t remain in office.
The Lapeer Board of Education needs to know their proposed change to this by-law will not go unnoticed and that many do not agree with it.
Let your voice be heard at the public hearing on November 17.

Privatization does not work. It takes extra income used for purchases outside of essantials which stimulates the economy. We need another, bigger stimulas bill. This time don't give 40% of it to the top 1% in the form of tax cuts. The taxes were cut under AWOL=Bush and 5-DEFERMENT CHENEY and not a job to speak off was created. Under Clinton tax rates we gained 23million new jobs. What rate do you think we should be at.
Great post Tim.
