                     County commission to Courser: Resign

 Rep. Todd Courser

Rep. Todd Courser LAPEER — The Lapeer County Board of Commissioners on Thursday agreed to send Rep. Todd Courser a letter with a simple message — resign.

The commission addressed the issue brought up at its Aug. 20 session, regarding the commissioners’ stance on Courser, who continues to say he has no plans to resign after allegedly sending an email to Republican supporters falsely claiming he was caught having sex with a male prostitute and further stated he was the target of a blackmail attempt by the “Lansing mafia.”

The Detroit News, citing audio recordings, reported that Courser had someone send the email to distract attention from his admitted extramarital affair with state Rep. Cindy Gamrat.

Commissioner Lenny Schneider and other commissioners at an at earlier meeting questioned whether the county board should make a unified statement or resolution in regards to Courser. Thursday, the board of commissioners read its decision in regards to Courser’s continuation as state representative of the 82nd House District.

Chairman Gary Roy read a letter he had prepared aloud to the board and the individuals in attendance. The letter read:

“Todd, normally when addressing an elected representative, this letter would be appropriately addressed to you as the honorable State Representative Todd Courser. Unfortunately, Lapeer County Board of Commissioners and the people of Lapeer County no longer feel that you deserve that title.

In November 2014 you were elected to the State House of Representatives for the 82nd District by the people of Lapeer County. You took office in January 2015, and within the first eight months in office, you’ve embarrassed yourself, your family and the people of Lapeer County.

Not only are you an embarrassment, you have become totally ineffective as the people’s representative in the Michigan House of Representatives. At this time, Lapeer County Board of Commissioners and the people of Lapeer County are asking you to resign your house seat immediately and spare all of us any more humiliation.”

The commissioners then discussed the letter before voting on whether they would submit the letter to Rep. Courser. After input from all commissioners, a unanimous decision to send the letter without the first paragraph was reached.

Following Courser’s extramarital affair with state Rep. Cindy Gamrat and alleged cover-up using taxpayer funded resources, many have asked him to step down from his position, including the Republican parties of Allegan and Lapeer counties. Both parties approved resolutions last Thursday night calling on state Reps. Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat to resign.

Modern Political Conservatism: A Preliminary Obituary

First, let me describe what I believe to be traditional or true political conservatism.  True political conservatism has five core principles: (1) Respect for the Constitution and its literal interpretation, (2) Limited federal government and respect for state’s rights, (3) Fiscal responsibility - low taxes, balanced budget, and low debt, (4) Individual liberty – defense of the Bill of Rights, and (5) A strong military.  The word conservatism, of course, may also apply to religious and moral…See More
